Fitness Friday: Tell Me About Your 2012

It's hard to believe that in just a little over two weeks 2012 will come to an end. Happy Fit Mama recently shared a look back at her year in running, and so inspired me to do the same.

Best Race Experience - Reach the Beach NH. My very first relay. I went into this experience knowing only one other runner, but ended up with a bunch of new running friends!

Best run - In September I had the opportunity to participate in a fun 3 mile run with legendary Joan Benoit Samuelson. An afternoon spent hanging out in the park on a beautiful fall day with an Olympic gold medalist and 25 other running enthusiasts doesn't get much better.

Best new piece of gear - I found two new running items this year that allow me to have everything I need on my runs, but stay hands-free. First the Simple Hydration Water Bottle. This gem makes carrying water on my runs so simple! And my Big Banjees Wrist Wallet. I love taking pictures, and wearing this means I can carry my phone without carrying it in my hand.

Best piece of running advice you received - I've heard lots of great running advice over the year, but the one that stands out the most to me came from Joan Benoit Samuelson. Her belief that there is no finish line reminds me that it is up to me to stay focused and healthy.

Most inspirational runner - My running partner (aka the energizer bunny - according to my husband) is so amazing. Not only does she run, and run, and run, but she is also one of my greatest supporters. It doesn't matter what I need (someone to listen, take a picture, or adjust schedules), Daisy is always willing to do what she can. Thanks girl!

If you could sum up your whole year in a couple of words, what would they be? Adventurous. Exciting. Fun. FitFluential. I have had a blast all year pursuing my passion, meeting new running friends, and experiencing some pretty amazing escapades.

Now it's your turn. Tell Me About Your 2012!

    Sprigs Earbags GIVEAWAY!

Saturday's weather reminded me that winter is right around the corner and I need to protect my ears from the cold and wind. Just because Mother Nature hasn't dumped a bunch of snow on us yet, doesn't mean it isn't biting cold out there.

So this morning as I packed my running bag with my favorite Nike running capris and a warm pullover, I also made sure to include my Sprigs Earbags. I have been using them ever since receiving them to review.

The afternoon temperatures hovered near 40 degrees, but with the added winds and lack of sunshine, it was chchchchilly

The run was cold. You can see me hiding my hands in the picture. During the run my lower legs were cold (I should've worn long pants instead of capris), but my Earbags kept my ears nice and warm.

Now YOU can win a pair of your very own. Sprigs has generously offered three winners a pair of Earbags of his/her choice.

    Review: Sprigs Earbags

You may remember that I participated in a Sprigs review a couple of weeks ago. This week, I'm happy to be reviewing another Sprigs product: Earbags.

I like to run in the cold weather. I also like to be prepared and comfortable. When it comes to what I wear on my head, I'm pretty picky.

    Sad.

Many runners wear winter running hats to keep their head and ears warm. I too have tried these. While they do keep my ears warm, unfortunately they keep my head TOO warm.

    Eh.

Since the hat was too warm, I tested a winter weather headband. This worked to keep my ears warm and let my head stay cool. However, I like to wear colorful, pretty hairbands to keep my locks under control. The combination of hairband and winter headband was just too much.

    Yea!

Enter, Sprigs Earbags. These bandless earmuffs keep my ears warm, let my head stay cool, and do not interfere with the wearing of my favorite hairbands.

Earbags are little ear warmers that fit right over your ears. They come in a variety of sizes, colors, patterns, and materials. Lined with Thinsulate® they keep the cold outside and the warm inside. They also come with a super cute storage bag to keep them clean and safe.

Earbags are extremely easy to use. First you flex it open by bending slightly back. Slide it over your ear and then snap in place by pushing forward. That's it! Sprigs has a great how-to video here.

My trial with Earbags was performed on a 6 mile run in perfect weather conditions: temperatures hovering in the mid 30s, sunny skies, and a slight breeze. I easily slipped the bandless earmuffs over my ears standing right outside my car and then my running partner and I were off as usual.

Occasionally during the run, I had to reach up to touch the Earbags to make sure they were still there. They were so light and didn't bounce or rub at all. Throughout the run I could hear my running partner's conversation without interference and my ears stayed comfortably warm.

Sprigs has a great selection of Earbags and if you place an order during the month of November, you can use my coupon code Escapades20 for 10% off of orders up to $29.99 or 20% off orders over $30. It expires 12/12/12 at 11:59 PM EST.

What kind of winter head gear do you prefer?

I was not compensated for this post, however I did receive the Earbags at no cost. All opinions are my own.

Review: Sprigs Big Banjees Wrist Wallet

    Big Banjees wrist wallet

I was very happy to be asked to review some gear from Sprigs. As a runner who hates to carry anything in my hands, I have had my eyes on their running wallets.

I was lucky enough to choose the Banjees style and color/print from a large selection. I wanted to look at something that would allow me to carry my iPhone on runs, so I chose the Big Banjees Wrist Wallet in purple paisleyblack. Unfortunately, it was not in stock so I was sent paisley/black.

The first thing I did was put my iPhone into the fold over hooded pouch. In a matter of three steps, it was in. It fits securely and doesn't look like there is any way for it to fall out.

    wallet with iPhone only

The running wallet also offers storage for a variety of items in the zippered section. I put in my id, my bank card, and car keys. Even with my phone, the big banjees wrist wallet was comfortable on my arm. Here's a video that demonstrates how to use the running wallet.

wallet with iPhone, id, bank card, and keys

When I used the running wallet for the first time on a long run, I put my iPhone into the fold over hooded pouch and my Sport Beans into the zippered section. I carry my valet key when I run, so I just put it in my short's pocket as usual.

In the past I have carried my iPhone with me for safety reasons, but mostly because I want to take pictures. Running with it in my hands is a nuisance and my hands get sweaty. Wearing my upper arm band is convenient, however it's awkward trying to get the phone in and out while running.

The Sprigs Big Banjees Wrist Wallet solves the problem of how to carry my phone with me on runs. Just a mile into my first run, I pulled open the hood and took out my phone to snap my first picture. Getting the phone back into the hooded pouch with the running wallet on my arm was a little difficult at first, but after a couple of attempts I got the hang of it.

Wearing the running wallet on my wrist was not uncomfortable. Most of the time, I forgot it was there. It didn't feel heavy or make me feel warmer than normal, although it was a chilly day. The zippered section was simple to use and I was able to access my Sport Beans easily.

Be sure to check out the full line of Sprigs Banjees products. They have something for everyone! When you place your, order use my coupon code RunningEscapades20. It is good for 10% off of orders up to $29.99 or 20% off orders over $30. It expires 11/30/12 at 11:59 PM EST.

How would you use a running wallet?
