Treadmill Tuesday and More

On my walk to the fitness center this morning, I decided that I was going to do a treadmill interval workout. My knee has been feeling better and my little test run a few days ago was successful.

I though it was a good sign that I be greeted by a Chinese Monkey on my way into the Hilton fitness center. 2016 on the Chinese calendar is the Year of the Monkey, and this year it's a Fire Monkey which represents ambition and adventurous character.

It's been so long since I was running regularly that I didn't even have my watch in my bag. Instead I had to use the app on my phone. (This is making me really want the new Apple Watch).

I kept my workout nice and easy: 5 minute walking WU, 3:2 run/walk intervals for 20 minutes, and then 5 minute walking CD. It was not a cardio, speed workout. This was another test to see how my knee felt running for a longer period of time, but without overdoing it. I'm pretty happy with how it went.

After my treadmill workout I spent a little time with the weights. The Dirty Dozen workout is still my favorite. I'm excited that I have moved up in weight on a couple of the exercises.

The last part of my fitness center workout is always in the pool. I love the cardio I get from swimming laps, but even more I love the feel of my body stretching out in the water. Today I had the pool to myself.

Back at home after lunch and a nap (this cold weather makes me sleepy!), I did Yoga Camp day 4. Today was about awakening. I want to awaken my muscles and get stronger.

Treadmill Tuesday: Progression Run

I saw this on Facebook and it describes exactly how I feel any day that I don't run.

It was even worse yesterday when a red rainfall warning cancelled the weekly SWIC hike and schools too. The warning says that enough rain has fallen to flood the streets making it dangerous to be out, even in cars.

After taking the day off from fitness, I was really looking forward to today's run. Tuesdays mean SWIC coffee at the Hilton. I don't mind chatting with friends and having a snack before heading upstairs to the fitness center.

A lot of runners use progression runs to increase their overall speed. I like them because they help me increase my endurance. I always have a better run when I start off at a comfortable pace in the beginning and slowly increase.

Here's how my progression looked today.

Treadmills make progression runs easy for me and I'm feeling really good about this one.

Other things making me happy today:

Swimming. The best way to cool off.

Very large Fuji apples. My favorite.

SWIC Running Group becomes official.

Finding good ideas for post run snacks.

How do you feel on rest days?
Do you use progression runs in your training?
What's making you happy today?

There almost wasn't a #TreadmillTuesday

I spent my morning at the SWIC Welcome Breakfast signing up runners for the new running group, drinking mimosas, and enjoying a wonderful breakfast party. This was a much bigger event than the normal Tuesday coffees at the Hilton and was about 30 minutes away at the Marco Polo Hotel in Futian.

When I got home around lunch time, I was feeling pretty blah. I FaceTimed with mrC who is on a trip and told him I didn't think I was going to make it to the fitness center, but after taking some ibuprofen I decided to go for it.

I walked to the fitness center and five miles later, I felt much better.

Yesterday I read a great article on yoga stretches for runners (here), so after my run I actually did them. I'm not very good at stretching after my runs, but I felt so good going through all 10 poses.

My post-run swim made me feel even better. I love when no one else is in the pool.

Tomorrow is my second pilates class. Wish me luck!

Do you like mimosas?
Do you push through feeling yucky or take a day off?

Treadmill Tuesday: 10 More Minutes

This song makes me want to kick ass at life every time I hear it.

Today it inspired me to stay on the treadmill 10 minutes longer than I had planned. I was nearing the end of my 30 minute run when it came up on my playlist. My knee was feeling good, so I went for it.

"The only way you can know / Is give it all you have"

I believe I owned my run today!

Immediately after my run, I went right into plank work. Challenge day 8: side plank reach through 5x each side, plus timed side planks. Then I timed my standard and got a NEW PB!

Can you see the bead of sweat on my forehead?!?

I finished up my workout with 10 laps in the pool then biked it home. Love mixing things up.

What songs inspire you?
Do you mix up your workouts or stick to one activity at a time?
