Run and SUP for a Full Body Workout

Some days I want to run and some days I want to SUP. Instead of choosing, today I followed up my run with a paddling session and got the best of both worlds!

mrC was home, so I took him on my 5K run route. I set my interval timer to 2:1, but modified as we ran like my last couple of runs. We also modified the route a little by cutting through the park and then taking the ramps (for handicapped and strollers) up to the big hill in the final mile.

In the end, we took about five recovery breaks including two on the ramp/hill section at the end, one restroom stop (paused my watch for this one) and one longer recovery at the beginning because the road slopes down pretty significantly and I'm still avoiding running downhill for the most part.

Although the finish time wasn't my fastest lately, I did spend more chunks of time running and that is the most important thing for me right now.

After watching some hockey and having breakfast, we headed to the beach with our paddles. SUP works a lot of muscles at one time: back, shoulders, arms, abs. We paddled for about an hour, going out and back twice. Using Mapmyrun, I estimate that we paddled a little over a mile.

The combined cardio and strength workouts really wore me out ---> which means it was a really good day.

I love getting mail and today my BAMRbands order arrived. I love that they can be shipped to me in Hong Kong. I can't wait until my next workout when I can sport one of these.

To cool down after the beach, I made us berry delicious smoothies. This is seriously the best way to lower my body temperature and the added protein (Bob's Red Mill is my favorite) makes it a good recovery beverage too.

Do you ever double up different types of workouts?
Do you add protein to your smoothies?

I'm linking up with Annmarie, Nicole and Jen for Wild Workout Wednesday!!

  1. It has been so long since I've done stand up paddle and I can go… About 20 minutes from my house and do so. I'm going. Even if it means I fly solo well I paddle. I need the variety and in the blink of an eye it will be 110° here in Texas

  2. I love SUP--I finally tried SUP yoga in Florida this past March and I loved it! Seriously, I'd trade in my stethoscope any day to be a SUP yoga instructor.

Yes, we put protein in our smoothies--I like to make it a complete meal!

    1. Absolutely! Even better when you're on vacation. I admit, I'm loving that I can do it every day if I want to. One of the perks of living in Hong Kong, haha!

    1. That's where I have most of my experience until now. We were super excited to bring inflatable boards to Hong Kong. It's like vacation all the time now!

  6. All my smoothies are based around my protein powder (vanilla flavoured) and then I add fruit to spice it up. I'm doing weight training right now and backing certain body split exercises.

    1. Vanilla is my go-to protein flavor too! I only chocolate if I'm just making a shake.

    1. With your planking ability, I'd say your core is strong enough to keep you balanced!! Definitely!

    1. It is! It does not feel like a workout because you're on the water and in the sun and having so much fun!

  10. I'm more of a protein shake kind of person, but I make them with almond milk, collagen peptides, cocoa powder, stevia, ice, and sometimes spinach. I'm pretty simple.
I used to love doing yoga and running together, but best of all is running to a fitness class and then running home. BEST.

    1. I do love me a chocolate protein shake! I should try running to and from my fitness class on the days I don't do other errands. What do you do with your bag/stuff? I usually have a small drawstring tote with me.

  11. I have a kayak and it is quite the arm and core workout especially when it's windy out on the lake. You look like you have a beautiful place to paddle board there!
Not only do I add protein to my shakes I'll also add a little to my coffee in the mornings!

    1. I might be kayaking with some friends soon. I'm hoping I can handle two hours of paddling! Protein in your coffee? Brilliant! I will be trying that today ;) Thanks for the idea!
